In order to fulfill your independent reading project assignment, you will be asked to read a novel of your choice. Upon completion of the text, you will create a portfolio.
This project is to be completed primarily outside of class. You will be granted one library day to select your novel and seek approval of your teacher.

All novels must be viewed in-person by Mrs. Reed for approval by .

Project Overview – All students will read a novel chosen from the list provided and create a book portfolio.

The Book Portfolio
· Will be a packet of 6-7 pages. Only type on one side of each piece of paper.
· Must be typed
· Has two main components of required items and optional items.

Required Items – Your portfolio must include the following 7 required items to earn a passing grade. Each will be at least one page in length.
1. A title page with Book Title, author, your name, your rating of the book (1-5 stars) and a 1 line recommendation/non-recommendation for the book.
2. A “Good Words List” of at least 10 words from the book for vocabulary complete with quoted sentence and definitions.
3. 4 Reader-Response worksheets (completed during reading, 1 full page each)
a. The first reader response worksheet should be written on material from the first quarter of the novel. It should be a 1)prediction of what will occur later in the book and a 2) character description including comments the character makes, actions he takes, or thoughts he thinks ( you can also include thoughts other characters think about your selected character) or 3)setting description – time, place, weather- as it applies to the novel.
b. The second and third reader response worksheets should be written on the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the book. Select any 2 of the following for your responses:
i. A personal experience as it relates to the book.
ii. A character connection to modern day society.
iii. An evaluation of the author’s handling of events and characters.
iv. The climax of the book and why you think it is the climax.
v. Explain any themes that are running through the book.
c. The fourth reader response worksheet should be written on material from the 4th quarter of the book. It should be a 1)book review written for other high school students, or 2) a film proposal for making the book into a movie.

Optional Items- Choose one of the following options.

Option 1: Include a self-created graphic or pictorial representation of a significant scene or component of the story.
Option 2: Present your book to the class with a PowerPoint presentation or talk that lasts at least 5 minutes.
Option 3: In your own words – write a one page biography of the author including other popular books.
Option 4: Create a new title for the book and give a 1 page explanation of how your title fits.
Option 5: Write a poem about your book at least 8-10 lines in length. It does not have to rhyme but should show some short of rhythm.
Option 6: Give an explanation of how the author used any of these literary devices in the book. simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, or allusion.
Option 7: Negotiate another option with me.
